Healthy Living CORTNEY BROWN·SATURDAY, APRIL 7, 2018 Thanks again for joining us! We are excited to see some new faces and meet new friends who care about community and people. Bev Cowling, President of Medicare For All and creator of Progressive Talk https://www.facebook.com/TheProgressiveTalk/ , Cathy Miller and her husband Chuck Miller . Chuck is running for State Senate of District 9 and is dedicated and people powered to promote peace & prosperity http://chuckmillerforsenate.com/. Shehnaz Soni from the renowned BEMER Group and an amazing health coach https://ashes2sona.com/ , and can’t forget my little bro who didn’t think he had much to give today but him simply being here gave me more motivation than he knows to live my best life. First, I want to highlight the many free healthcare clinics that are available statewide. You can find them @ https://www.freeclinics.com/sta/alabama . Please share this with anyone who may need it and remember free does not mean free. Please donate to these clinics if you can, any amount will help to relieve and dismantle classist policies in the health industry. This was not mentioned in the meeting, but this is important for me to highlight: Stress kills. Stress weakens movements, empathy, happiness, and love. Please realize that stress management and self care is just as much a part of the movement as protest, truth seeking, and survival tactics. Good health gives us freedom, the distinction between right and wrong, and the coping skills to learn and move forward. Please take care of yourself. Is it financial burden? We have something for that. You can refer to our living wages category @ https://alabamasolutions.weebly.com/solutions/category/living-wages . Do you need mental health support? NAMI Huntsville hosts support groups @ https://www.namihuntsville.org/support-programs and Free2Be offers free mental health counseling to any victim of a hate crime @https://free2be.org/ . Check out the rest of our solutions for healthy living @ https://alabamasolutions.weebly.com/solutions/category/healthy-living . UPDATES Meeting notes will turn into networking, so you can bring a pen and paper, any kind of material that’ll heal Alabama’s struggle. The second change is $100 will continue to go to amazing Alabama nonprofits without the poll. If you would like to nominate a great AL nonprofit or charity then please do. I will try to donate to whichever charity that needs it the most, and for each awareness month. For April, I’m giving to Kids To Love for the Woman’s Guild. So, this will start in May. Last, since this was our last theme to cover, I want to leave the table open for all of our priorities. I will call out each individual priority and take notes for those with ideas to share. Please comment on anything I may have missed. Thank you again! And see you May 5th! Problem Solve > Invest > Restore

Thank you to everyone who was able to make it! I’ll start with our list of ways to support public education then go into updates and plans. 10 Ways To Support Public Education 1- Give through Donors Choose to help support and sponsor classrooms. Here’s the link for Alabama classrooms that need your help today @ https://www.donorschoose.org/donors/search.html?state=AL 2-Support Teacher Wages, through Donors Choose, contacting local representatives or webpages like this >>https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/ 3-Help schools to make the right decision in providing nutritious meals and snacks. This helps lessen the stress in students and teachers by combating multiple disease in unhealthy foods. Here’s what happened when this school changed their diet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mm0XvU5rOOs 4- Teach proper studying methods. Here’s something I’ll be taking to Fresh Check Day for Mental Health & Suicide Prevention event for UAH students. You’re welcome to utilize these notes for yourself and your students. http://www.uc.edu/content/dam/uc/fye/docs/Information%20Sheet.Academic%20Success.pdf 5- Support meditation & peaceful spaces in classrooms. Check out the benefits here >>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVnbL5Wm6eY 6- Contact local schools to supply what’s needed such as books, art, sports equipment, band equipment that you can donate. 7- Remember that the Optimus Club @ http://hsvoptimists.org/ helps donate band equipment and has been helping youth since 1947. 8- Volunteer tutoring or life classes. And be kind to donate to these volunteers. They are helping to shape these students that wouldn’t have gotten that kind of help without them. 9- Support a student. Offer discounts, housing, nutritious meals, help with loans etc. Here’s the official page for loan forgiveness @ https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service 10- Support Therapy Partners, Inc. @https://www.therapypartners.org/ Alabama’s nonprofit that uses animal therapy such as rescue, rehab, and helping young students to achieve literacy. “ PAL - Partners Achieving Literacy Therapy Partner teams work with at-risk-of-failure second and fourth graders in semester long programs to give the children an opportunity to better their reading skills by reading aloud to an affectionate, non-judgmental animal.” NEWS UPDATE: I’ve made some good connections with people interested in coming to our meetings with no visitations, so will discontinue Meetup (calling these meetings from now on). Barbara Sweeney Bryan will contact Boys & Girls Club to see if they’re have or are interested in tutoring opportunities to their youth. June Lim and I will be working on a list of scholarships for Alabama Students to better qualify for affordable and possibly free higher education. I’ll be working on contacting the senior center to see if anyone is willing to volunteer tutoring. Also, make sure to check out our page for more ideas for bringing better quality to public education @https://alabamasolutions.weebly.com/solutions/public-education . Thank you and I hope to see you at our next meeting for healthy living. Problem Solve > Invest > Restore
